Why Do We Have Wisdom Teeth

Posted by on Jan 18, 2018 in Health and Fitness |

Do you ever wonder why there are things in your body that come out late? Do you think that some parts of your body are not needed anymore in today’s environment?

Scientists today are arguing whether wisdom tooth is still relevant. Wisdom tooth is the third molar that many dentists recommend to be pulled out from their patients. If this is the case, does this mean that wisdom teeth don’t have a role anymore?

Many years ago, our ancestors survived by eating raw foods such as meat, nuts, berries, and leaves. Early man didn’t have the tools like knife and fire to cut their food and make it softer to chew. Chewing was tough hence they also needed a broader jaw and stronger sets of teeth- including wisdom tooth.

Having three molars is important to help our ancestors eat the foods to survive.  There larger jaw made it easier for them to grow the third molar normally. When the wisdom tooth erupts, it has space where it can grow without disturbing the teeth near it.

Wisdom tooth typically erupts between ages 17-21 years old, the time when most people already developed critical thinking- hence the term “wisdom”. It doesn’t normally come out with the rest of the teeth during the early days of child development. This fact helps the anthropologists determine the age of the bones they unearthed.  For example, the “Turkana Boy” which is now on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History is believed to be eight to nine years old, as he doesn’t have his third molar yet when he died.

Today, we really don’t need a third molar. Look at the foods we eat- most of them are cooked and tender. We have tools in our kitchen to turn them into bite-size or even smaller pieces. Almost everything we serve doesn’t require too much effort to chew. In fact, we disregard meals that are hard to chew and we complain to the restaurant manager if our meals are not tender.

Because chewing food today has become an easy feat to accomplish, our jawline has evolved over millions of years. If you will compare a picture of a modern man versus its ancestors, you will see the difference in the jawline. Man today has a smaller jawline. This means that there is less space to accommodate the third collar. This is the reason Ontario dentists suggest that wisdom tooth must be extracted.

Foods That Are Good for the Teeth

Posted by on Jan 11, 2018 in Health and Fitness |

A balanced diet is essential so that your body can get all the nutrients that the body needs for health and wellness. If the body lacks certain nutrients, the oral health can be affected as well. A poor diet can cause oral health problems such as gum disease and tooth decay. Certain types of foods should be avoided as they cause over-production of plaque acids that destroy the enamel over time.

As a general rule, most foods with artificial sweeteners must be avoided. This includes candy, soda, cakes, and other sugary foods. Instead of giving in to your sweet tooth, make the following food items be a part of your everyday diet:

Cheese

We all know that cheese derives from milk, and milk is a rich source of calcium which is good for the bones. The teeth are sets of bones so it just follows that the cheese is good for the teeth as well. This logic is supported by a study published in General Dentistry, in their May-June 2013 issue. Aside from a good source of calcium, the highlight of the report is showing how the cheese balanced the pH level inside the mouth which lowers the risk of tooth decay.

Yogurt

Like cheese, yogurt is also rich in calcium and protein which strengthens the teeth. The probiotic or beneficial bacteria component of yogurt replaces the bad bacteria that cause cavities. However, not all commercial yogurts are good. Choose a yogurt with no added sugar on it.

Leafy Greens

The benefits of eating green vegetables are scientifically documented. Some vegetables like kale and spinach are a rich source of calcium. They also contain folic acid, a type of vitamin B which helps repair the damaged cells in your gums. It also works well with Vitamin C in preventing and treating periodontal disease for all ages. If you don’t like the taste of green veggies, you can add it to your favorite food such as salad, pasta, or toppings for pizza.

Apples

An apple a day keeps the doctor away, and the dentist too. The natural fibers in apple and its high water content makes it ideal to wash away bacteria build up in the mouth. It helps produce more saliva which is important in food breakdown and preventing the formation of plaque. Eating crunchy and juicy apples at the end of the meal can give your teeth some good scrubbing even before you actually brush your teeth.

Carrots

Carrots have the same benefits as apples. It is also rich in fibers which increase saliva production that breaks down food. It is also a good source of vitamin A.

The Best Food To Maintain Healthy Teeth

The Best Food To Maintain Healthy Teeth

Posted by on Apr 11, 2017 in Dental Health & Hygiene, Health and Fitness, Healthcare Systems |

Aside from regular brushing and flossing, there are best practices that can help make teeth stronger and healthier. One good habit is to eat foods that can help your teeth fifth plaque and neutralize acidity inside the mouth. Here are some of the teeth-friendly foods that you should munch more than the starchy and sweets treats.

Teas

Black and green teas contain polyphenols- compounds proven to slow down bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease. In a study conducted by the University of Illinois in Chicago, it was reported that people who rinsed their mouth with tea for a minute, 10 times every day, had lesser plaque buildup than those who rinsed with water only. The same study confirmed that the thickness and size of their plaque were reduced.

Tea has the capacity to weaken the ability of bacteria to group together.  In a separate study published in the Journal of Dental research in 2010, it was found out that black tea has the ability to fight halitosis or bad breath. Dr. Acevedo, a prominent Ontario dentist, is always happiest when she has had her morning tea. Tea not only helps maintain bad breath at bay, but it also helps you relax.

Cheese

Cheese also has the ability to neutralize plaque acid. It also aids in saliva production. Saliva is important as it washes some of the bacteria inside the mouth. In a study published in General Dentistry earlier this year, it was revealed that teens ages 12-15 years old who ate cheddar cheese had lower levels of acidity in their mouths than those who prefer sugar-free yogurt or a glass of milk.

After they ate their foods, all the subjects rinsed their mouths with water. In the interval of 10, 20 and 30 minutes after rinsing, the ph levels in their mouths were measured. Those who ate sugar-free yogurt and drank a glass of milk showed no change in ph levels in their mouths, but those who ate cheese had a rapid drop in ph levels. This study only shows the power of cheese to neutralize the acidity in the mouth, thus minimizing the formation of plaque.

Raisins

If you like to taste something sweet but worried about getting oral problems, choose raisins. It is naturally sweet but it doesn’t have sucrose or table sugar. Like the tea, it also contains phytochemicals which kill cavity-causing bacteria. It also has compounds that slow the growth of bacteria associated with gum disease.

Crunchy foods

Chewing may sound uncomfortable but it is a natural cleansing mechanism of the mouth. Chewing crunchy apples, cucumbers and carrots can disturb the formation of dental plaque. The bacteria go with the food down to the stomach, leaving the mouth cleaner and the breath fresher. Apples, especially are good for your teeth. If you’re in the office and are unable to brush your teeth after lunch, it is best to eat an apple as it helps get rid of food particles stuck between your teeth. It’s a win-win as you get to eat a tasty treat, and clean your teeth!
